Gertrude Bell's Photographs, 1909
The British archaeologist and traveller Gertrude Bell visited Tur Abdin in May 1909 and photographed the Monastery of Mar Awgin. These photographs, kept in the Gertrude Bell Archive at Newcastle University, are among the oldest known images of the monastery. They are shown as they are in the archive; the people in them are part of the historical record.
